The sacred duties of the Klikor Shrines

At the heart of Klikor lies the Torgbui Adzima and Mama Vena shrines, where divine power meets ancestral tradition. Through sacred rituals, spiritual guidance, and community service, the shrine continues to protect, heal, and bless generations of people.

Established in the early 1700s after the Ewe migration from Notsie, the shrine continues to guide and protect the people through divine rituals and ancestral wisdom.

Degbetsi

Is a sacred traditional dance performed by the Fiasidiwo, those dedicated to Torgbui Adzima and Mama Vena as part of the shrine's spiritual community. The dance is highly symbolic and deeply rooted in the spiritual and moral fabric of the Klikor people.

Spiritual Symbolism

Degbetsi represents purity, devotion, and obedience to the gods.

It is performed to honor Torgbui Adzima and mama Vena and the worshippers at large.

Costume and Appearance

Partakers wear white cloth, beads, and sometimes sacred markings or talismans.

They are adorned in a way that reflects spiritual sanctity rather than public entertainment.

Some key rituals

A ritual of servitude, building and repairing the shrine.

Kpor tortor is performed by men, these men would go to the forest, cut palm and coconut fronds and used them to restore the shrines worn out structures.

  • It is a sign of duty, reverence, and unity between the living and the divine.
  • The act reflects a renewal of physical and spiritual protection, as the men work in Torgbui Adzima and mama Vena's house. The shrine must remain strong to house the Torgbuiwo(priests) Fiasidiwo and the spirits.

The rite of repentance and restoration.

In Gbor dada/Kpo dada, the Priests casts the sins of the people onto a goat, symbolizing their burden of wrongdoing.

  • The goat is then beaten and sacrificed, offering atonement to the gods on behalf of the community.
  • The ritual ends with prayers for rain, a fruitful harvest, and spiritual peace..
  • It reflects deep ancestral wisdom about renewal of the soul, mercy, and balance with nature.

A sacred feminine duty of restoration and building, prayer, and blessing.

During Balili, our mothers divide into 2 groups, one group fetches water and the other clay.

  • As they gather at the shrine they use the mixture of the clay and water to plaster the walls of the sacred compounds.
  • While they work, they pray, chant, and invoke blessings upon themselves, the land and its people.

This ritual symbolizes feminine strength, nurturing energy, and spiritual guardianship, reminding all of the sacred role women play in upholding tradition.
